Goodnight from Emma Rosenzweig

The distinct filmmaker, artist and model Emma Rosenzweig offers a different take on fashion and film, always hued with her fascination for old movies, feminism and melancholy. Emma lets us in on her sleeping habits, thinking of skulls when brushing her teeth and kissing her husband’s neck before going to Wonderland.

Early bird or a night owl?

“ I have always been an early bird. Even if I go to bed at 5 in the morning and wake up with a hangover, I still go out of bed at 8 or 9 latest. It’s just not my thing to be lying in a bed all day long. I’d rather be outside in the snow or sunshine."

Do you have a ritual at night to prepare yourself for a good night’s sleep?

“I wash my face every night before I brush my teeth.. I can brush my teeth for a very long time. There’s something meditating about brushing your teeth. Something that makes you think about the fact that you have a skull. Then you think about death. And then … you fall asleep. Which is in fact, the closet to being dead…"

Has becoming a mum changed your sleeping habits?

"No, not really, in the beginning, the first 6 months, I didn’t really sleep at all, and that was crazy. I really thought about the fact that it’s being used as torture in some wars. When you don’t sleep you can’t tell the difference between real life and fantasy. It didn’t last that long luckily, and I sleep through the loudest sounds because I grew up in a noisy city area and my parents always had parties, so it was mostly my husband who was affected because he’s a light sleeper”.

What are you currently reading?

“At the  moment I’m reading two books at the  same time. “The Colossus” by Sylvia Plath, a  collection of her earliest poems. She’s one of  my favourite writers and her books are so  depressing which I’m quite fascinated with. I  actually only read depressive books right  now. “Notes On Suicide” – a philosophical  book about suicide, narcissism and  exhibitionism and homicide.

How do you prepare yourself for a long-haul flight crossing time zones?

"As long as I have my husband with me, that’s the only thing I need. If he’s not with me, I fall asleep automatically and then it’s just a boring thing that needs to be done"

The last thing you do before you go to sleep?

"Kiss my husband’s neck. Close my eyes and pretend to be asleep. Think about women running…"

Pyjama, night dress, your partner’s tee or your birthday suit?

“I always sleep naked. I have done so since I was a kid. I hate the feeling of wearing something when I have to go to Neverland.”
