Faaborg Museum, Spring Light & The Golden Peacock Room

Welcome to March, a month that brings daffodils, tulips, and hyacinths. As the days become longer and hopefully slightly warmer, we slowly begin the transition into Spring.

Spring also brings more trips to my hometown of Faaborg and our small chocolate-box cottage in the tiny village at the foot of the hills in Svanninge.

I always feel deeply inspired when I leave the city behind, and the inspiration to create my golden peacock print above came from one of my many visits to Faaborg Museum.

The museum is small, magical, and an architectural gem, housing some of the most beautiful and inspiring works by the painters from the artists’ colony that emerged in the town of Faaborg at the end of the 1880s, today still considered one of the most important in Denmark.

I loved my childhood in Faaborg, and now I treasure spending time with friends and family in this lovely seaside town, surrounded by rolling landscapes and tiny islands dotted along the horizon. A scenery that attracted and inspired many artists, as well as my grandparents, who arrived here in the late 1920s.

I especially love the work of the local female artists, particularly Anna Syberg, who is well known for her delicate floral watercolours.

But my absolute favourite room in the museum is the archive above, with its extraordinary golden wall paintings by the artist Johannes Larsen and the iconic Faaborg Chair specially designed by the Danish furniture designer Kaare Klint for Faaborg Museum back in 1914.

The room has double doors opening onto the lovely old garden, where you can enjoy coffee and cake in the afternoon.

I dream of taking a quiet rest on the leather sofa and having an entire day to study every small detail of the wall paintings, the exotic peacocks, grey ducks, cherry trees, and the beautiful selection of Scandinavian flora and fauna.

To me, Faaborg Museum and the golden peacock room feel like home, a cherished place I return to whenever I need grounding, balance, and inspiration in my life.
